Chapter Twenty-two
Consciuosness slowly crept back into Silas Carlsbad. The light on his eyelids was quite bright, so he kept them closed.
He didn’t seem to be in much pain except for his right hand and left elbow. He heard a voice and felt someone bandaging
his hand. It was Doc Collins. “Doctor… what happened?”
The young doctor’s reassuring voice answered, “You were in a jeep accident. You’ll be fine, but you’ll need to ice your
elbow for a while. This bandage can come off in a week or two.”
“How’s Penny?”
“More angry than hurt, and more annoyed than anything.”
Wolf chuckled as he gingerly opened his eyes. “I hate it when she’s annoyed. The cubs?”
The doctor turned off the lamp of his medical bed on the Marahuté. “They were in worse shape than you two. Penny’s
hybrid was the worst; I’m still tending to it. The freak show twins are totally fine, go figure. And that fourth one…”
Wolf sat up with a jolt, remembering fully what he
thought he had seen. “Where is it?” The young Australian turned to
another stainless steel table and turned back holding the cub. It certainly seemed to be the same cub… minus the wings.
Wolf turned it over in his hands, searching in vain for anything unusual beyond its color. “This doesn’t make any sense.”
The veterinarian nodded. “I know what you mean. I’ve ever seen or even heard of something like this, and Penny
actually screamed when I showed it to her. Which was kinda weird.”
Wolf tried his best to pretend he didn’t remember the cub having big golden wings earlier on. “The boss, does he know?”
Now Kodi really smiled. “Naw, I thought you’d like to tell him yourself. Think there could be another bonus in it for us?”
Wolf’s smile matched his doctor’s. “Oh, yeah. I know we’ve joked about it before, but we may be able to actually retire off
of this job.”
“Well, that’s up to him, right? You’re supposed to report to him as soon as you’re awake, by the way. I should get back to
the cockpit.”
Wolf reached over to the walkie-talkie on the wall. “Abdul, this is Wolf, what’s our status?”
“Welcome back, Sir. We’re in the air and a little ahead of schedule. We’ll be able to make our airdrops on time even with
this headwind. Jeep One is a wreck, though, we’re chopping it for spare parts for Two.”
“Yeah, I figured that. No matter. I sense that soon we’ll be able buy those ATV’s we’ve been wanting anyway.”
