It was lunch time at the compound. Wolf and most of his men were gathered around picnic tables enjoying dishes from
their various home countries’ cuisines. They were also trying not to appear too forlorn in front of their leader, or Mr.
Kang, for that matter. But they had to face up to the fact that their little safari was not proceeding as well as they had
hoped. One hyena, one panther. Pathetic. True, they did have a rather impressive cheetah cub en route. That team was
late, as a matter of fact.
Wolf wondered aloud, “I wonder where Charles and Marco have gotten themselves to?”
A Saudi Arabian man named Abdul answered, “Oh, yes, Wolf, I forgot. They radioed in while you were reporting to the
client. They are going to be late because they are picking up Max and Tuffy.”
Wolf raised an eyebrow. Max and Tuffy were the on-foot trackers. They preferred the most natural, down-to-earth,
sleep-in-a-tree tactics possible and were not expected to return for days. “Why? Max and Tuffy do not use vehicles. Did
one of them get injured?”
“No, but they said they were bringing in their specimen, and that it was nearly dead.”
Wolf stood to his feet and the men stopped eating. “Their specimen? They were tracking the liger cub.” Wolf was not
actually shouting, he never shouted out of anger. When he got angry his voice merely ‘focused’ to a tone that shook
people worse than others’ yelling. “Did you tell the doc?” Wolf was definitely mad and Abdul was definitely scared; he
could not answer. Wolf was amazingly gentle with most living creatures even as he was hunting them, but humans that
aroused his temper had a habit of abruptly switching career paths. Usually to that of a .45 target, following up to fertilizer.
Wolf glanced down the table to the veterinarian in question who shook his head. Fortunately for Abdul, Wolf merely
began barking out orders without using a firearm for punctuation.
“Doctor Collins, the priority specimen is en route. It is in very fragile condition so please prepare a crash cart.” The
young Australian man acknowledged the order and sprinted for his medical trailer. “The rest of you, clear the tables
away and prepare to receive and conceal the rover. Ivan, move the hyena and the panther to the delivery crate and load
it into the plane. Master Kang,” here Wolf actually smiled, “would you please inform the boss that the prized liger cub is
being brought in?”
