The Cubs' Quest episodes are different from the Circle of Life screenplay in several ways.
Whereas the screenplay is long, the short stories are, well, short. CoL is written as a script with
camera angle and production notes. The CQ stories are written as narratives, with inner
monologue and first-person perspective descriptions.
But most importantly is the difference between how the two were first imagined and developed.
Circle of Life started out as quite a different story, which I started writing right after watching the
original Lion King in 1994. It had to be overhauled many, many times. Characters were added
and deleted, songs were added, main roles were swapped around, and it was altered to be
more feature-film friendly. In fact, as recently as when I first started searching for artists to
illustrate it in 2003, I had never even heard the term 'fan-fiction'! It always had been (and
remains) my intention to one day see it on the silver screen.
On the other hand, the Cubs' Quest concept began after I had completed the first 'final' draft of
the screenplay. I had already learned a lot of lessons about cast size, story pacing etc, and so
I've never had to re-write any of the episodes. I recently had to tweak them just a bit to fit with
the latest changes to the screenplay, but that's it. And besides perhaps needing a more creative
name than 'Jozay' for my lead character, they're good to go.
These stories blend four big elements into their stories. The first are the cannon characters,
places and themes. To this I of course add characters from my own stories. Thirdly, you'll see
some of the most celebrated fanfic characters and concepts ('fanon'), such as Tanabi, Kopa,
and some of the themes from the Chronicles of the Pridelands. And last but by no means least,
starting in Episode Three: The Sunlit Kingdom you'll see original characters designed by
current members of the Fanart Archive, including many of their 'fursonas'.
So, as long as you know the stories of The Lion King, TLK2: Simba's Pride, TLK1/2, TLK on
Broadway, and Circle of Life, kick back, relax, and get ready for the inevitable cliffhangers
that'll make you email me demanding more!
